Hirokoji noboru, Teramachi - Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto

- quote
This historically prestigious temple has had an intimate relationship with the Imperial family, and was the location of many Imperial ceremonies. The temple was originally located inside of Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Residence) and was used as an arena for Imperial prayer. Many of the chief priests were originally Imperial family members.

Honen Shonin first appointed this temple to be a Jodo Shu temple during the era of Emperor Takakura. It was later moved to its current location during the mid-16th century (Tensho era), by the ruler of the country at that time, Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

The temple is home to many cultural assets, such as the famous Miedo which houses a wooden statue of Honen Shonin, as well many other old, carefully maintained buildings.
A portrait of Amida Buddha is considered to be a national cultural asset.

This temple of the Jodo Sect of the Pure Land Buddhism is famous for its "crying Fudo, weeping Fudo" Naki Fudo 泣き不動. It is a special version of a "migawari Fudo".

The illustration above is from a scroll about this "crying Fudo" 泣き不動絵巻.

It relates to the famous .. Abe no Seimei 阿倍晴明 of the Heian Period.

At the temple Mii-Dera, the priest, Chikyo 智興 , was struck of an unknown illness. When Abe went to see him, he realized: "Someone must take on your illness to heal you!"

So one of Chikyo's disciples, Shoku (Shookuu 証空), stepped forward and took the illness upon himself to heal his beloved master. He hurt very much and was in great pain, yet he never forgot to pray to Fudo Myo-O for help.

When Fudo Myo-O learned about this event, he shed tears of compassion. Then in turn took the illness upon himself, Shoku was healed, but Fudo died from it and went to hell. His both hands were tied behind his back and he had to stand before the final tribunal of Emma, the King of Hell. His two disciples Kongara and Seitaka are standing in front of him, as you can see on the scroll.
When Emma heared the whole story, he was deeply moved, kneeled on the floor and apologized. Then he sent Fudo back to this earth.

It is a strange story, that Fudo Myo-O should die and fall into hell to endure the tribunal of the King of Hell. And the King of Hell in turn would fall on his knees to apologize ...

The scroll is of the Muromachi Period and an important cultural property of Japan.
